We Love Maxis

If you’re a fan of Veronica M, you know we have a major obsession with maxis. It doesn’t matter if it’s a maxi skirt or a maxi dress; as long as it’s floor-sweepingly long, it’s going to end up in our closet. Part of the reason our maxi love is so real is because the style has a long — and somewhat controversial — history in fashion. Back in the day (we’re talking way back), women were actually required to wear long skirts. It was even written into law in 1890s England: Women weren’t allowed to show their ankles (or even their necks!) in public. Long skirts were the standard up until the 1920s, when shorter skirts started to show up (think: flapper style). Then, in the 1960s, the mini came along and changed everything. When the maxi skirt started to make its way back into the fashion scene as part of the 1970s bohemian movement, it was almost a rebellion. It was women’s way of saying, “I don’t need to show my legs in order to be seen as attractive, thank you very much.” Not only were maxi skirts making a feminist statement, but they were super comfortable, too. Because women deserve to feel cute and comfortable in whatever clothing they wear. That’s all a very long way of saying: Maxis are a must, in more ways than one. Ahead, seven ways to make a statement in style this summer with maxi skirts and maxi dresses. Maxi Dresses Whatever’s on your calendar this summer, you’re sure to get a lot of mileage out of a maxi dress. You can wear your favorite maxi to the beach, to the bar, or even to a summer wedding, depending on the accessories you pair with it. Some of our favorite options include the Antigua Surplice Maxi Dress, which has the most gorgeous antique-looking print; and the Paradise Wrap Maxi Dress, which was practically made for a summer evening soirée. If you’re into tropical florals (and who isn’t?), the Stevie Wrap Maxi Dress is an absolute must. Looking for something a little more casual? Throw on the Del Mar Strapless Dropwaist Maxi Dress — it makes the perfect cover-up for a beach vacation. Maxi Skirts Maxi skirts offer a little more versatility than maxi dresses — after all, they can be mixed-and-matched with your favorite tops for endless outfit options. This season, the maxi skirt is having a definite moment, and there have never been more fashion-forward prints to choose from. Add a little flower power to your look with the bright, poppy Stevie Wrap Maxi Skirt. (We love this one for its wrap closure too, which means you can adjust the fit.) Tie dye is also decidedly trendy for summer, and you can easily get in on the trend by adding the blue Rio Maxi Skirt to your wardrobe. Finally, no summer closet is complete without a splash of snake print, as seen in the Mariska Maxi Skirt. Will you be wearing more maxi dresses or maxi skirts this season? Either way, you’re bound to look cool and comfy.
